The Student Sustainable Farm was started in March of this year by an assistant professor in the agriculture department at Texas State, The University Star
reports. The farm is next to the San Marcos Municipal Airport on Highway 21 and was funded thanks to a $40,000 grant from the Environmental Service Committee.
The farm was started as a way for the agriculture department to have a teaching and research site to examine sustainability. The majority of the 100 students who work at the farm do it as homework and work aside volunteers to grow crops including artichoke, broccoli, cabbage, kale, carrots and sweet potatoes. The produce is then sold at farmers markets in The Quad.
Students got involved out of a concern that industrialized farming has left Americans unable to grow their own food locally. Students were worried about the fact that most produce purchased from a grocery store has made a journey of over 1,500 miles before being purchased. Locally grown produce, on the other hand, is usually sold just a few hours after it was harvested.
The university would ultimately like to create a system where they can sell the fruits and vegetables at the Texas State campus as a way to fund the project and introduce students to the benefits of eating locally. The student workers hope that the idea will spread to other universities as a progressive way to give students a “different perspective on where food comes from”. They are from different majors at Texas State, but are united in their desire to care for the Earth and the environment and to treat it sustainably.
